March 2007

Bahrain Maritime & Mercantile International (BMMI), the Bahrain-based sales and marketing, logistics and supply chain group, is literally going places.

The group has expanded its operations outside Bahrain and its overseas presence now covers six countries across three continents, with a presence in Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti and North America. BMMI has also successfully diversified its business activities by establishing joint ventures and strategic alliances with regional and international partners.
Its efforts in its various fields of operations have yielded good results, with net profits of BD9.22 million ($24.45 million) in 2006 against BD8.07 million in the previous year.
Listed on the Bahrain Stock Exchange, BMMI is one of the fastest growing companies in its sector, with an annual turnover approaching $200 million. The group adopts a performance-driven, customer-focused business approach in line with international standards and global best practice. Based on 125 years’ uninterrupted operations in the Arabian Gulf, BMMI today enjoys a reputation as one of the leading private sector business enterprises in the GCC region.
BMMI’s core activities are grouped under three specialist areas, namely sales and marketing; contractual business, and logistics and supply chain.
Sales and marketing
The group is a major distributor and wholesaler of leading international food and beverages brands in the Arabian Gulf. Additionally, in Bahrain, BMMI is a market leader in the food and beverages retail sector and a leading shopping mall operator.
Principal operations include Nader Trading and BMMI Beverages in Bahrain, and ZAD Marketing & Distribution in Qatar. The group’s portfolio comprises confectionery, packaged and canned food, toiletries, fragrances, cosmetics, tobacco, household goods, and beverages.
Some of the leading agencies and brands represented by the consumer division across Bahrain and Qatar include Hershey’s, MasterFoods, Kraft Food International, Kent Confectionery, Storck, Himalaya, Kellogg’s, Colgate-Palmolive, Yardley, Jergens, Alberto VO5, Henkel, Japan Tobacco, and Red Bull. Major principals represented by BMMI Beverages include Heineken, Diageo, Anheuser-Busch, Bacardi Martini, Brown Foreman, Scottish Courage, Interbrew, Southcorp, Moet & Chandon and Rothschild.
The group is also a major retailer of food and beverages in Bahrain. Both Alosra Supermarket and BMMI Beverages are market leaders in their respective retail segments. In addition, BMMI manages the Najibi Centre shopping mall.

Contractual Business
BMMI is a leading regional player in the provision of contract-based consumables supply services for overseas governments and non-government organisations. Through its specialist divisions, subsidiaries and joint ventures, the group has successfully executed contracts in the GCC, the Middle East, Central Asia and East Africa.
BMMI’s Government Contracts division is currently servicing a major five-year prime vendor food and consumables supply contract for the US Defence Supply Centre Philadelphia, covering Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In Djibouti, East Africa, the division recently secured several contracts for supporting overseas military logistics and supply operations.

Logistics and Supply Chain
The group’s comprehensive logistics and supply chain operations rank among the most sophisticated in the region. With integrated operations spanning the Middle East and East Africa, the group also benefits from its own purchase and supply coordination office in North America.
In Logistics, BMMI provides a comprehensive range of warehousing, distribution and shipping services in the Middle East and East Africa. The group’s total warehousing capability exceeds 150,000 sq m, and is supported by state-of-the-art racking, material handling and inventory stock control technologies.
Bahrain Logistics Services operates the group’s regional logistics hub at Sitra in Bahrain, while B&B Logistics, a joint venture between BMMI and Banz (a leading Bahrain-based trading and warehousing services group) operates warehouses at Mina Salman port in Bahrain and in Djibouti Free Zone, East Africa. In Kuwait, the group recently established BMMI-United Logistics Company, which is a joint venture between BMMI and Kipco (a premier investment holding company in the Mena region).
In the supply chain, the group provides, through its end-to-end supply chain management services, global sourcing of food and consumables for local and international distribution, with over 80 per cent now sourced directly from manufacturers and brand owners. BMMI has its own purchase and supply coordination office in North America.
In the shipping sector, ISS Bahrain (a joint venture between BMMI and Inchcape Shipping Services) provides a comprehensive range of port agency, vessel husbandry, container, freight-forwarding and project services. The company is also a longstanding Lloyd’s Agent and acts as a correspondent to many international P&I clubs.
ISS Bahrain is currently providing port agency services for vessels docking at Mina Salman port in Bahrain. This is part of a five-year US Navy port husbandry contract covering the South West Asian region, which was recently awarded to Inchcape Shipping Services.

Corporate strategy
BMMI’s corporate strategy involves continuing to enhance its core businesses, diversifying its activities into new business sectors, and expand geographically across the Middle East and other selected emerging markets. At the same time, it will continue to strengthen its core logistics and supply chain capabilities, improve operational excellence, enhance individual performance, and ensure the provision of exceptional HR and IT support services, the company says.
